Before the official launch of FroYo aka Android OS 2.2, we heard that Google has been working silently on Android OS 3.0 codename GingerBread and planning to get it ready by the 4th quarter of 2010, holiday time. Around the same time, Microsoft will also be launching Windows Phone 7 Phone loaded with its refreshed and renewed operating system, Windows Phone 7.

Digitimes reports, Smartphones based on Google’s Android 3.0 and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 are expected to enter a head to head battle on the fourth quarter of 2010 with both smartphone featuring processors over 1GHz and screen larger than 3.5 inches, according to Taiwan-based handset makers.

We have been seeing, how successful Android OS is and it has captured a significant market share in the smartphone operating system. Looking at the past report, Microsoft has not being doing well. Because, a lot of OEM’s are waiting for Windows Phone 7 launch which is few months away. So, it looks like Microsoft will be under more competitive pressure than Google.

The source also mentioned, Except Apple, RIM and Nokia, the other vendors of smartphones, including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony Ericsson as well as Taiwan-based HTC, Acer and Asustek Computer, will adopt both Android 3.0 and Windows Phone 7 with the proportions in terms of models and volumes to hinge on market conditions.

It will be interesting to see the growth percent of Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 & RIM’s Blackberry OS for the 1st quarter of 2011.
