According to Hon Hai Precision executive, who declined to be named - “The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled.  To make it light and thin, the design is very complicated. It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day.”

The executive said Hon Hai has taken steps to improve its productivity and address scratches on the metal casings of some new iPhones that were shipped. Hon Hai has recently implemented a new quality check procedure to reduce the chance of damages.  But he noted the iPhone 5 uses a new coating material that makes it more susceptible to scratching.

He admitted that the conflict between assembly line workers and quality inspectors at its Zhengzhou site last month was partly due to the metal casing and other “quality issues,” but he didn’t elaborate.

“The Zhengzhou site, which was set up in 2011, is still pretty new to us. We are still learning how to manage the work force there,” said the executive.

• any time a set of blobs is fetched remotely (from Apple or Cydia), redsn0w also saves them locally (and will check there first if you click “Local”)
• for your future restoring convenience, you should also submit all of your past and present TinyUmbrella blobs to Cydia if you haven’t done so yet.  Resubmitting is okay and won’t cause conflicts.

Here are more details on the iOS5-to-iOS5 restores for A5+ devices.  (Note: pre-A5 devices don’t have these restrictions — just follow the redsn0w prompts during the restore).

1. redsn0w now lets you restore an A5+ device from any iOS5 to any other iOS5 as long as you have correct 5.x blobs for the starting (current) and ending points of the restore

• APtickets eliminated “higher-version only” comparison of firmware restores (just like BBtickets did for the baseband)
• example restores supported by redsn0w if you have the correct blobs: 5.1.1-to-5.0.1, 5.0.1-to-5.1.1, 5.1.1-to-5.1.1, 5.0.1-to-5.0.1
• if you don’t have the blobs locally, let redsn0w try to fetch them remotely (redsn0w always tries both Apple and Cydia).  Any succesful remote fetch also saves a local copy too.

2. You DO NOT QUALIFY for iOS5-to-iOS5 restores if you got to your current 5.x via an OTA update

• the tickets saved by Cydia, redsn0w, and TinyUmbrella do not cover OTA update ramdisk images
• even if they did, it’s the “wrong kind” of ramdisk (you’d need to start at that earlier pre-OTA FW)
• devices fresh from factory or refurb may fall in the “does not qualify” category (your results will vary)
• it’s okay if you previously got to 5.x via an OTA update, as long as your current 5.x was installed via a normal iTunes restore.  All that matters is how you got to your current 5.x most recently
• redsn0w detects an OTA/normal-restore APticket mismatch very early, so if you don’t know your status there should be no harm in trying.  Any device in recovery mode after such a mismatch can boot normally again just by going back to “Even More” screen from the “Restore” screen (or use “Recovery Fix” if you quit redsn0w before doing that).

3. Unlike the A4 devices, redsn0w can’t (usefully) prevent the baseband updates of A5+ iPhones and iPads.

• and so, redsn0w automatically flashes the currently signed baseband when it does A5+ restores, even if those basebands didn’t come with the original firmware
• stay away from this if you have an unofficial unlock that isn’t supported by the newest baseband
• the least-tested baseband update code in redsn0w is for iPad2,3 and iPad3,2.  Please give any feedback on those iOS5 restores in the comments section below.

4. iPad2 owners (all three models) with saved 4.x blobs can use those instead, even from 6.x

• if you have both 4.x and 5.x iPad2 blobs, you can always get to 5.x via the 4.x blobs, even if you’re currently on 6.x
• you cannot get to 5.x from 6.x without the 4.x blobs (but you may still qualify for the iOS5-to-iOS5 restore described above)
• if somehow you have 4.x blobs but no 5.x blobs, you can still go down to 4.x from 6.x
• this only applies to iPad2 owners (they’re the only A5+ devices that ever had a public 4.x FW)
• redsn0w still supports (but doesn’t require) jailbreaking A5+ devices at 5.0.1 and 5.1.1.  Just head back to the first page after re-restoring to 5.x.  It’s always much faster to jailbreak those FW versions with a freshly-restored device, before letting iTunes restore from a saved userland backup.

And finally, some random details:

5. ultrasn0w isn’t yet updated for 6.x

• by now you probably should be taking advantage of the extremely cheap IMEI-based unlocks of iPhones sold by established online retailers like http:://cutyoursim.com
• still, IMEI-based unlocks don’t work in all cases.  We’ll announce when ultrasn0w is ported up to 6.x
• redsn0w will still hactivate your 3GS or iPhone4 if you run it before the device is activated.  Due to the current tethered 6.x JB status, redsn0w now hactivates 6.x without requiring subsequent tethered boots.  If you accidentally hactivate with redsn0w, use the “Deactivate” checkbox available from the Jailbreak screen, not the normal one in “Even more”

6. As always, redsn0w lets you “Fetch” the SHSH blobs currently flashed onto your pre-A5 device

• use this if you’re at 5.x or 4.x but without having saved your blobs when the window was open
• this is only useful when Apple is no longer signing the firmware, otherwise Cydia/redsn0w “New”/TinyUmbrella blobs are superior (but you’re welcome to fetch your 6.0 blobs this way anyway)
• fetching blobs in this fashion will automatically forward them up to Cydia, as well as save a local copy

Now lets get started with the process.. Here is what you need…

• A jailbroken iPhone that can be activated in iTunes
• A Computer with the latest iTUnes installed.
• Internet connection
• Carrier name that the iPhone is locked to.

Keep in mind – This method will not work for those iPhone’s who’s IMEI is blacklisted

Step 1: Launch Cydia, Tap on Source, Tap on Edit, Tap on Add and add the following repo – “repo.bingner.com”

Step 2: Now, Install Sam Bingner’s SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package.

Step 3: Before you launch SAM, make you have your SIM card you intend to use in your iPhone.

Step 4: Go to utilities and select “De-Activate iPhone”, your ActivationState under “More Information” should now be “Unactivated”

Step 5: With SAM enabled, choose “By Country and Carrier” in “Method”; find your carrier, for some carriers operating more than one Carrier ID you may need to select “SIM ID”; easy to tell since iTunes will not activate if the wrong IMSI is selected.

Step 6: Go to More Information”, copy or write down the IMSI in “SAM Details”, then tap “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”.

Step 7: Go back to the main SAM screen and change your “Method” to manual. Paste or enter the IMSI string we saved in Step 6.

Step 8: Connect your iPhone to your computer and allow iTunes to do its job (namely re-activating your phone), double click “Phone Number” parameter at the main device screen and make sure that the ICCID matches that of your SIM card. If not you need to start over from Step 3..

Step 9: Unplug your phone, close iTunes.

Step 10: Disable SAM. The source article says to uninstall SAM and delete your lockdownd folders; it’s unnecessary.

Step 11: Connect your phone to iTunes again, you should get an error saying that your phone cannot be activated. This is normal. Just close iTunes and open it again.

Step 12: That’s it! Wait for few seconds you should see signal bars, congratulations.

Step 13: Push notifications may stop working after this procedure but can be easily restored with “clear push” utility in SAM followed by connecting to iTunes.

Your phone will work normally with your SIM card and that SIM card ONLY since we have tricked iTunes to think that ICCID is one of the intended carrier’s. The phone can be rebooted and connected to iTunes freely without losing the “unlock”, at least for now.

Since it does not involve emergency numbers or IMSI spoofing it will not have any of the issues associated with SIM interposers. Tested working on iOS 5.01 but should work with tethered 5.1 too.

In response to the above ABC ‘A Trip to The iFactory’ documentary – Apple, Faxconn and Fair Labor Association pitched in and made the following statement.

From Apple, regarding Zhou Xiao Ying’s claim that she carves the aluminum shavings from 6000 iPad logos per day: 

“In manufacturing parlance this is called deburring. Her line processes 3,000 units per shift, with two shifts per day for a total of 6,000. A single operator at Ms. Zhou’s station would deburr 3,000 iPads in a shift.”

Apple clarified that Zhou Xiao Ying couldn’t have been working a second shift since it would be impossible if she worked 8AM to 8PM, then worked 8PM to 8AM, and then worked her next day’s shift. Ying likely misunderstood Weir’s question about “how many Apples do you carve each day?”

From Foxconn, regarding starting pay being too low for a Chinese payroll tax withdrawal:

“We have over 75 percent of the employees in the category of earning at least 2,200 RMB ($349/month) basic compensation standard. That means they are earning 13.75 RMB ($2.18) per hour. If they work overtime on the weekend, they will earn 27 RMB ($4.28) per hour. In order to reach 3500 to be taxable, they will have to work 47 OT hours to reach 3,500.”

“If the overtime hours are in weekdays, they have to work around 63 hours per month to reach that level of salary to be taxable.”

“Your statement is only true when applying to the entry-level workers while over 75 percent are already over the probation and earning more than 2,200 RMB basic salary.”

In the recent past we also learned that Apple are in talks to buy out 160 acres in Prineville, Oregon. The land was purchased for $5.6 million from Crook Country. Now, MacRumors points us to KTVZ.com article, that confirms that the fruit company is planning to build one more large data center.

Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed Tuesday that “we purchased the land and it’s for a data center,” but could not speak to details beyond that, other than to say it will be a “green” facility.

For those who are not aware, Prineville is the same area where FaceBook build its own data center back in 2010. This center has been met with notable criticism from environmental groups such as Greenpeace because the power utility company contracted for the center, PacifiCorp, generates 70% of its electricity from coal.

So, lets get started to free our iOS devices

Step 1: Download Absinthe (Mac / Win – Coming Soon / Linux – Coming Soon)

Step 2: Unzip the downloaded file and open Absinthe

Step 3: Connect your A5 device (iPhone 4S / iPad 2)

Step 4: Now, click on the jailbreak button and wait for few minutes. – You will see the following

• Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while..
• Sending initial data. Your device will appear to be restoring a backup, this may also take while.
• Waiting for reboot – not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!
• Connecting device
• Waiting for device to finish booting
• preparing jailbreak data..
• Sending payload data, this may take a while.. (Do not touch your device yet)
• Almost done – just unlock the screen if necessary, than tap the “Jailbreak” icon to finish. (it might be on a different home-screen, so don’t give up looking!)

Step 5: Now, look for Absinthe Icon on your home screen and tap on it. The jailbreak will trigger, when you see “Greenpois0n” home page, that means your iOS device is jailbroken – Let it respiring.

Note: If you encounter “Error establishing a database connection” error. Go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait instead.

Currently the dream team is on its final stage of testing the public version of the jailbreak. So, we can expect it to be out anytime from now. So, stay tuned.

Few important points:
iPhone 4S Jailbreakers and Unlockers:
Don’t upgrade your device to iOS 5.0.1. Doing so may lose the opportunity to carrier unlock your device. We know that @MuscleNerd has been working on a promising iPhone 4S unlock – BB 1.0.11. However, it is not confirmed that a unlock for iPhone 4S will be released along with ‘A5 Corona Untethered Jailbreak’.
iPhone 4S & iPad 2: If you only care about jailbreak, you are free to upgrade your iOS device to iOS 5.0.1.

Ever since the December release of @pod2g’s “corona” untether for iOS 5.x on A4 and earlier devices, all eyes have been on the attempts to extend it to the A5 devices: the iPhone4S and iPad2. Due to the combined efforts of @pod2g and members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team, we’re nearly ready for a general release! All technical hurdles dealing with the underlying technique have been overcome, and it’s now all about making the jailbreak as bug free as possible.

On his blog, @pod2g playfully nicknamed the combined effort a “dream team”. It’s an ironic name, because the past few weeks have left everyone involved with very little sleep and the opportunity to dream But we’re now near the final stages of testing the public version of the jailbreak. Please allow time to clean up any remaining bugs in the jailbreak clients.

Jailbreak programs:

To be as flexible as possible, the A5 version of the corona jailbreak will take multiple forms:

Chronic Dev have incorporated the overall flow into a GUI that runs on your Mac or PC
iPhone Dev have incorporated the exact same flow into a command-line interface (CLI). This will allow us to help users through individual steps of the jailbreak manually, to both help the user and help improve the overall flow. Although the CLI will also allow the user to perform the entire jailbreak from beginning to end, we anticipate it will be more useful in debugging the occasional errors. The CLI currently has over 20 individual options (in addition to the single “jailbreak” option) that should be useful during debug after the GUI release.
Once all the bugs in the flow are worked out, we’ll also incorporate it into the redsn0w GUI (but still leave the CLI freely available too). In order to maximize the chances of the jailbreak working for everyone, the redsn0w GUI will use native Apple iTunes libraries — this technique is slightly different than how the Chronic Dev GUI handles communications, and should provide nice combined coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.

Because there were so many different people and teams involved in the A5 corona release, we all felt the most equitable approach to any Paypal contributions should involve a single shared account. If you do feel the desire to contribute to the “dream team” Paypal account, it will be distributed to the members according to internally agreed-upon proportions The same link will be on both the Chronic Dev and iPhone Dev versions of the GUI. This method seemed like the fairest to everyone involved!

Firmware:

The supported firmware versions will be:

iPhone4S: 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
iPad2: 5.0.1 (9A405)
iPhone4S owners looking to maximize their chances of achieving an eventual software-based carrier unlock should be staying at 5.0. Everyone else should be at 5.0.1. If you’re an iPhone4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the BB by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open.

Support:

The overall flow used by the GUI and CLI to inject the A5 corona jailbreak has never been done before, and there may be unforeseen problems once it’s released to the public. It’s very important for you to sync your data, photos, and music before attempting any version of this jailbreak. We’ll be watching the comments section below for signs of any widespread problems, but please be aware that you jailbreak at your own risk!

This is really a good news for those who are eagerly waiting for an untethered jailbreak. We strongly recommend you all to you use the latest version of TinyUmbrella or the latest version of iFaith to save your iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blob and APTicket.

I’d recommend to all users to dump their SHSH blobs/apticket (before and after updating if they are going to do so) with iFaith.

Greetings, friends & jailbreakers!
It has now been several months since OPK and I (posixninja) took the stage at JailbreakCon (fka MyGreatFest) in London. Since then, I & other members of the Chronic Dev team have been keeping quietly busy on many fronts, so I thought it was about time to give you all a brief update.

Update on iOS5 Jailbreak

First & foremost: during my JailbreakCon talk in September, I was excited to announce that the Chronic Dev team had already discovered 5 different exploits for use in our upcoming jailbreak. Unfortunately, that announcement was a bit premature, because in the subsequent weeks, Apple found & patched a (critical) few of those exploits, between the beta versions we used for testing and the final release of iOS5 on October 12.

Sadly (and trust us, we are much more sad about this than any of you could possibly be), this has prevented us from being able to release a new jailbreak as quickly as we wanted to. As I hinted at earlier this week on Twitter, I was initially disheartened to think that so many of the countless hours we’ve worked on this jailbreak seemingly went right down the drain.

Not to mention, these are by no means the first exploits that have been “lost” by Chronic Dev (or any other iOS hacking teams) in this manner. In fact, these are just a few in a long-running series of exploits that were patched by Apple before we hackers could make use of them in a free jailbreak for you, our loyal fans.

Well, to be frank… this is bullshit!!! And now, Chronic Dev is ready to turn this little information battle into an all-out, no-holds-barred information WAR. So we want to use this experience as an opportunity to explain the method Apple uses to find potential vulnerabilities, as well as to unveil our new master plan, which should not only prevent this from happening to us again in the future, but also allow us to use all of you to find more exploits, so we can ultimately get an untethered jailbreak into your hands as quickly as possible.

How Apple Finds Exploits

One of the primary challenges in working with userland exploits is that, every time any program crashes on your iPhone, a “crash report” is generated and instantly sent back to Apple. As you can imagine, while we’re working out all the kinks in the exploitation of a vulnerability, we may need to crash any particular program thousands & thousands of times.

It’s possible to change your iTunes settings to stop sending this diagnostic information back to Apple, and of course everyone in Chronic Dev has made this change on all our development machines. However, even this is not always 100% effective at preventing Apple from obtaining our data. For instance, if one of us is at a friend’s house and plugs our iPhone up to his or her computer (even just to charge it), it’s very likely that computer is set up to send all our valuable data & crash reports right back to Apple.

As a side note, this is also the primary reason we’re unable to perform or allow any public beta testing of our software before it’s released. Any potential beta tester could be unknowingly sending crash reports back to Apple, which would prematurely alert the company to our exploits & the discovery of their vulnerabilities before we even have the chance to release.

Help Us Help You: Send Us Your Crash Reports

Instead of allowing this vicious cycle to continue, we decided to write a new program to turn Apple’s own beast against its master, per se. All this program requires from you is to attach your iOS device to your computer and click a single button!

At this point, the program copies all the crash reports off your device (which, under normal circumstances, would be sent right back to Apple), and instead sends this data to a secure, private server hosted by your friendly Chronic Dev team. Next, our program proceeds to neuter your copy of iTunes, simply by changing your settings to prevent your computer from sending any further diagnostic information from your device to Apple.

Using this agglomeration of your crash reports and our ninja skills, Chronic Dev will be able to quickly pinpoint vulnerabilities in various programs by using the same techniques Apple currently employs. At the very least, your data will help point us in the direction of which applications are the most vulnerable, so we can focus our time & energy on these with laser-like intensity. And, of course, this will also prevent Apple from accessing all your valuable data, just so they can then turn around and use it against you.

PhyScroll allos you to use your iPhone/iPod touch/ iPad’s accelerometer or volume buttons to scroll in iOS!

It works with any application! Download it, select the desired activation method going to Activator preferences (Settings > Activator), open an app and activate PhyScroll. Then your just need to tilt the device/press the volume buttons to scroll!

You can change between the scrolling methods (accelerometer and/or volume buttons) in PhyScroll settings. The accelerometer rate of the accelerometer scroll and the size of the volume scroll is also configurable.

If your are using iPad, you can enable manual scroll selection. This option will ask you in what scroll you want to activate PhyScroll, and it’s useful for applications that have multiple scrolls, like most of the iPad apps.

I created a new ruby plugin that is used by plamoni’s “Siri Proxy”, a proxy server for Apple’s Siri assistant. This proxy server allows for the creation of custom plugins that can intercept recognized speech and perform virtually any function imaginable (programmable, scriptable).

The “Siri Proxy” plugin I wrote handles interaction with a php script that runs on my web server. The php script, which I developed months ago for personal use, allows me to send commands to my car which has a Viper SmartStart module installed.

Current commands accepted are: “Vehicle Arm”, “Vehicle Disarm”, “Vehicle Start”, “Vehicle Stop”, “Vehicle Pop Trunk”, and “Vehicle Panic”.

–UPDATE: Now it also responds to more conversational commands such as “Start my car”, “Lock my car”, “Pop my trunk”, etc…

For those who are wondering how this method works – The process basically tricks the activation process on the iPhone. When you insert unofficial network SIM into iPhone 4S, it pops up a message saying “Invalid SIM Card”. This process basically tricks the iPhone into leaving that waning up and allowing unofficial network to work. This method was first discovered and confirmed by @xoicos aka Caleb Daniels.

Added to this, it is also confirmed that the process also works on iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 & iPhone 3GS.

Drawback: @MuscleNerd confirmed that the process works but, its not a great solution as it only works until the TMSI is refreshed [TMSI is the temporary mobile subscriber identity. It's used in locating a user of a cell network]. In other words, the unlock may not stay for a long time. You would need to reapply this process when required.

We at MacHackPC have not tested this process. But, we are pretty much convinced that it works. Below you will also find a video in action.

Step 1: Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card

Step 2: Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call

Step 3: Turn ON Airplane Mode

Step 4: Eject out AT&T SIM card

Step 5: Insert T-Mobile SIM card

Step 6: Make sure WiFi is OFF and make sure you tap on ‘Forget this Network”

Step 7: Switch OFF Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.

Step 8: Activation Required will be displayed on the screen

Step 9: EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the ‘E’ on the top left corner of the screen

Step 10: Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone

Step 11: Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed

Step 13: Eject SIM card

@chpwn, a well know hacker / developer, who managed to port Siri on to iPhone 4 & iPodTouch explained why they are not able to distribute the port procedure to general public. He also explained that it would be possible once there is a public jailbreak for the iPhone 4S.  -Watch the video below to see Siri running on iPodTouch.

As @stroughtonsmith and I demonstrated a few days ago, it is possible to run Siri on iPhone 4 and iPod touch. However, as we are currently unable to distribute the port or the procedure we used, I think I should at least explain the reasons why that isn’t happening

For a little background information, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of how copyright law works. Apple owns the copyright on the software, images, and data used inside iOS: they created them. Because of that, they have the ability to decide what other people can — are licensed to — do with them: copy, distribute, adapt, modify, or any number of other protections of their works. Pretty simple. But this does lead to one important, if somewhat counterintuitive, fact: just because a piece of data is available freely on the internet does not mean that you have the rights to redistribute that data (or any part of it) without an applicable license. In practice, that means that just because certain files are freely available on a device or inside a firmware (.ipsw) file freely downloadable from Apple’s website, it does not imply that those files can legally be distributed by anyone else.

In the context of Siri, this means that the resource files, images, and code that makes up Siri cannot be freely shared. These frameworks and plugins that work together to build Siri are not included on other iOS builds besides the ones running on the iPhone 4S. Therefore, these files must be copied from a running iPhone 4S, or from the iPhone 4S’s firmware (.ipsw) file. The first method requires you to own an iPhone 4S to copy the files from, so it is not useful for most people: if you already own an iPhone 4S, you already have Siri. The issue with the second method is more technical: the firmware files are distributed encrypted, and we do not yet have the decryption key to access the Siri files inside of the iPhone 4S firmware file.

Just from that, you currently must already own an iPhone 4S to install Siri on it without a blatant copyright violation. But even that’s not all: if you do all of that, there’s still a few more reasons why Siri won’t just work.

Many people have managed to display the Siri UI on the iPhone 4; it is, in fact, reasonably trivial with access to the files copied off an iPhone 4S (as explained above). But only Steven and myself — yes, I know there are others that claim to have: I’ll tell you this, they haven’t — have managed to make Siri successfully contact the Apple servers and receive responses. Why? Here, the answers become slightly more murky. Partially this is because I don’t want to reveal too much about the procedure to try and ensure that you all will be able to use it in the future, and partially because it requires a jailbroken iPhone 4S, something which is currently not publicly available. Anyway, the general gist of it is that you almost certainly need the access provided by the a jailbreak to extract all of the information necessary to get Siri working on another device, and that’s not yet availble. (And, no, I don’t know when it will be. You can follow along with me while we wait, though!)

Anyway, I hope that clears up some of the technical and legal reasons why distributing a build (or instructions) to run Siri on older hardware isn’t possible at the moment. When we have the ability to decrypt the encrypted iPhone 4S firmware file — to extract the Siri files legally, without the need for an iPhone 4S — and we have an iPhone 4S jailbreak to obtain the other nececssary information at a mass scale, hopefully this can become a reality and everyone can try out Siri on their older devices. Until then, showing you a video that it is possible is the best we can do.

(Oh, and to answer another popular question: nobody has tried it on an iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 3G or an iPad on iOS 5, so we don’t have any clue if it will work or not there. But we can hope it will!)

The 10.7.2 update also includes Safari 5.1.1 as well as fixes that:

• Allow reordering of desktop spaces and full screen apps in Mission Control.
• Enable dragging files between desktop spaces and full screen apps.
• Address an issue that causes the menu bar to not appear in full screen apps.
• Improve the compatibility of Google contact syncing in Address Book.
• Address an issue that causes Keynote to become temporarily unresponsive.
• Improve VoiceOver compatibility with Launchpad.
• Address an issue that causes a delay in accessing the network after waking from sleep.
• Enable booting in to Lion Recovery from a locally attached Time Machine backup drive.
• Resolve an issue that causes screen zoom to stop working.
• Improve Active Directory integration.

iCloud on OS X Lion includes the following features:

• iCloud stores your email, calendars, contacts, Safari bookmarks, and Safari Reading List and automatically pushes them to all your devices.
• Back to My Mac provides remote access to your Mac from another Mac anywhere on the Internet.
• Find My Mac helps find a missing Mac by locating it on a map and allows you to remotely lock the Mac or wipe all its data.

Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

In a letter to Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community, Steve Jobs recommended Tim Cook to name Apple’s new CEO. Added to that, Steve Jobs also mentioned that he would like to serve as a Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee, if the Board sees fit.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple”s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple”s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

If you look at the Apple’s past three fall media events, they took place on September 9th, 2008, September 9th, 2009, & September 1st, 2011. Kodawarisan also confirmed that the date was not the product of guesswork, but came from a source in the know.

In previous years, Apple has updated the iPhone in the summer during WWDC, leaving the iPod to wait until this September media event. This year, however, without an iPhone upgrade at WWDC, all eyes are on this September event for the launch of the iPhone 5. Apple’s suppliers are said to begin shipments of the iPhone 5 in September but AllThingsD has suggested the iPhone 5 won’t actually be released until October. It’s not clear if that gives Apple room to pre-announce the iPhone 5 in September, or if it means Apple will let September pass by with no mention at all of the next iPhone.

Last year’s event, Apple introduced new iPod Touch, iPod Nano & iPod shuffle. But, this year, Apple is expected to launch iPhone 5 & iPad 3 alongside, next gen iPod Touch & iPod Nano.

Though you get a glimpse of iPhone 5 at the event, but the device won’t be in customers hands until mid October.

The elongated hole for the home button has suggested that the home button may itself also become more oval in shape. That is the direction our designer took as well. It’s also possible, however, that the home button will retain its round shape and Apple has simply allowed extra space for swiping across the home button in a left to right or right to left manner. These’s been some speculation that Apple could allow such a gesture for users to quickly switch between multitasking apps.

The exact screen size is another aspect that was hard to determine on the design drawings alone. Our renderings have enlarged the screen size to the space shown on the case designs. But, Apple has introduced a “swipe down” from the top of the screen notification system in iOS 5 that could benefit from some extra finger-space near the top of the screen in order to properly register. So, it may be that the screen isn’t quite as large as depicted by the cases, and simply Apple allowing for extra space for these swipes. The representation here, however, does show a 4 inch screen which preserves Apple’s current screen ratio. Rumors have suggested that Apple may be enlarging the screen size in the upcoming iPhone models.

The back of the device has tapered edges which makes it look much closer to the iPod touch. As well, there had been rumors that Apple would be abandoning the glass backing of the iPhone 4 and instead moving back to an aluminum design.

The final dimensions of the new design will be around: 4.33″ x 2.36″ and .27″ thickness at the top and .21″ at the bottom (The current iPhone 4 dimensions are: 4.5″ x 2.31″ x .37″). So the new design is actually shorter than the existing iPhone 4, but slightly wider and thinner.

Accounts

• When creating an iCloud account, you can use any Apple ID as long as it is a full email address and not a MobileMe account. If you have a MobileMe account, you can move that account to iCloud. You can find more information on iCloud at: http://developer.apple.com/icloud
• When setting up an iCloud or MobileMe account using the setup assistant and leaving Find My iPhone on, it might actually turn Find my iPhone off after the setup. Please verify in Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendar/YourAccount that Find my iPhone is toggled On after leaving the setup assistant.
• NEW: Enabling iCloud services in Setup Assistant may not always be saved correctly. After completing Setup Assistant you should visit Settings > iCloud to verify the state of the iCloud account. If you have multiple iCloud or MobileMe accounts configured on the device you should also visit each of those accounts in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar to verify each account.
• It is recommended that you disable Bookmarks on multiple accounts. If they are enabled, the results might be undefined.

AirPlay

• Starting in iOS 5, video content in applications and websites are AirPlay-enabled by default.
• iOS 5 supports AirPlay of video via AV Foundation.

Apple TV

• Apple TV Software beta enables users to mirror the contents of an iPad 2 to an Apple TV (2nd generation) using AirPlay. This beta software also enables Photo Stream on Apple TV so users can access photos stored in iCloud. Apple TV Software beta is being provided to test the latest AirPlay functionality with your iOS 5 apps and web sites. If you wish to install Apple TV Software beta on your device, you must first register your device UDID in the iOS Developer Program Portal.

Calendar

• Birthday calendars are not currently available via the icloud.com website or in Windows. They will be available in a future release.
• NEW: The default calendar is still the On My iPhone calendar despite setting up an iCloud account during Setup Assistant. As a workaround, reset the default Calendar after finishing Setup Assistant in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Default Calendar.
• NEW: Pushing iCloud Calendar data is not working in iOS. To sync your iCloud Calendar, launch the Calendar app or refresh the calendars manually using the Calendars button in the top left corner.

Core Image

• Several filters have been added since beta 1. GameKit

iBooks

• iBooks 1.2.2 may fail to display some text or images in books. Please update to iBooks 1.3 in the App Store.

iCloud Backup

• As this is beta software, it is recommended that you do not use the iCloud services to store any critical data or information. If you enable iCloud Backup, automatic backup with iTunes when syncing will be disabled. We also suggest that you manually back up your device with iTunes. Backups made with earlier versions of iOS 5 beta will soon become incompatible, and will no longer be available. It is strongly advised you upgrade to this version of the iOS 5 beta in order to continue backing up your devices. If you encounter errors restoring from a backup, or enabling a backup more than one hour after signing into iCloud, try deleting your iCloud account from Settings and adding it back. If errors persist, please try erasing your device and initiating the restore again.

iCloud Storage

• During the iOS 5 beta period, any documents stored on the servers might be purged periodically before GM. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you do not store any critical documents or information on the servers.
• NEW: Provisioning Profiles no longer need to be enabled for iCloud in the iOS Provisioning Portal. All newly generated provisioning profiles are now automatically enabled for iCloud. If you are using an Xcode managed Team Provisioning Profile, click refresh in the Xcode Organizer to obtain a new iCloud-enabled profile. To enable all other provisioning profiles for iCloud, simply regenerate your profiles in the iOS Provisioning Portal.
• If your application is using the NSMetadataQuery class, you must set a predicate, even though the predicate itself is ignored.
• In this beta, the setSortDescriptors: method of NSMetadataQuery is not supported.
• FIXED: To use iCloud prior to beta 5, you had to manually specify various container identifiers (your application’s Display set) within an Entitlements file for both of your Mac OS X and iOS projects.Starting in beta 5, to enable iCloud storage within your apps, simply click the “Enable Entitlements” checkbox in the Summary pane of your project. Xcode will create a custom entitlements file for your project that automatically includes your Team ID. You can add additional iCloud Container values as required by your application. (Note that you must regenerate your existing provisioning profiles, either with Xcode or in the iOS Provisioning Portal, to use iCloud storage.)If you specify a custom identifier string for your iCloud Key-Value Store or iCloud Container entitlement values, you no longer need to prepend your Team ID to the beginning of the string. Xcode will prepend your Team ID to these entries automatically
• The container identifier string you pass to the URLForUbiquityContainerIdentifier: method of NSFileManager MUST include the team ID at the beginning of the string. As a convenience, if you pass nil, Foundation uses the first document container ID specified in your app’s entitlements.
• There are issues using the Cloud Storage document API in conjunction with protected data which can lead to data corruption.
• FIXED: In this beta, document-based applications cannot always detect when files change, move, or are deleted out from underneath them.
• In this beta, file presenters (objects that adopt the NSFilePresenterprotocol) do not receive some of the messages that they’re supposed to receive, especially:
  • presentedItemDidChange
  • presentedSubitemDidAppearAtURL:
  • presentedSubitemDidChangeAtURL:

  You can workaround this by implementing the relinquishPresentedItemToWriter: method and checking to see if the writer actually wrote when your file presenter reacquires. You can also use FSEvents to observe file system changes

• In this beta, messages about changes to files in a directory are not getting delivered to objects that adopt the NSFilePresenter protocol.
• While reporting a bug related to the iCloud storage interfaces, please include the logs collected during your debugging session. To generate these logs, you must install a special debug profile on your device.The debug profile can be obtained from http://connect.apple.com. This profile enables the generation of debug logs that are needed to diagnose any problems using iCloud storage. The instructions to collect the logs are:
  1. Install the profile. (The easiest way to do this is to mail it to yourself and open the attachment on their device.)
  2. Reproduce the bug.
  3. Sync with iTunes to pull the logs off your device.
  4. Attach the logs to your bug report. You can find the logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/DeviceName/DiagnosticLogs.

  These logs can grow large very quickly, so you should remove the profile after you have reproduced the problem and pulled the logs for the bug report.

• NEW: File names are case-insensitive in OS X but case-sensitive in iOS. This can lead to problems when syncing files between the two. You should take steps on iOS to avoid creating files whose names differ only by case.

iMessage

• iMessage beta 1 will be unable to communicate with iMessage users on beta 2 or later.

iPod

• NEW: When using the volume buttons on the device, or on headphones, the volume slider in the UI of applications may not update even though the volume level has changed.

iTunes

• The version of iTunes that comes with beta 5 cannot sync devices that have the beta 4 software installed. To avoid this problem, do the following:
  1. Sync any devices that have beta 4 installed to the version of iTunes that came with beta 4.
  2. Upgrade iTunes to the version that comes with beta 5.
  3. Connect the device and install the beta 5 software. (Understand that you might see a failure to sync error when you first connect the device.)
  4. After installing the beta 5 software, restore from your the backup you made in step 1.
• Videos purchased from the iTunes Store do not play on a 2nd generation AppleTV over AirPlay with iTunes 10.5.

Location

• FIXED: The startMonitoringSignificantLocationChanges method of CLLocationManager does not cause applications to be resumed or launched in the background for significant location change updates. However, if a backup from a previous software version (where an application was monitoring significant location changes) is restored to the device, significant location change monitoring will continue to cause that application to be resumed or launched in the background.

Mail

• FIXED: Forwarding a message with attachments included does not attach the file and the message compose screen does not change from “Loading….”
• NEW: When changing the host name of an email account in settings, blank messages may be seen in the unified inbox. As a workaround, delete and re-add the account instead of changing its host name.

Music Library

• FIXED: Some songs are missing their album artwork after changing the device library via syncing.

OpenGL ES

• FIXED: In iOS 5.0 beta 4, several OpenGL ES extensions have been moved from the APPLE namespace to the EXT namespace, causing some API to be renamed. The altered extensions are EXT_color_buffer_half_float,EXT_occlusion_query_boolean, EXT_separate_shader_objects, EXT_shadow_samplers, EXT_texture_rg, EXT_debug_label, and EXT_debug_marker.

OTA Software Update

• If you are doing an OTA software update, you will need to re-sync your photos with iTunes.”

Personal HotSpot

• FIXED: In this beta, iPhone 4 device cannot join personal hotspot even if it is on due to a non functional Wi-Fi tethering on these devices.

Photos

• FIXED: If you apply red-eye adjustments in iOS, and import your image into the iPhoto seed build, the red-eye adjustments will not appear on that image in iPhoto. As a result, subsequent syncing of your image back to the iOS device from iPhoto will not show the red-eye adjustments.
• NEW: When restoring photo libraries from an iTunes backup, some photos may not appear in the Photos application after restore. Please back up your photos before updating to iOS Beta 5.

Simulator

• Location services are not functional in iOS 4.3 simulator running on Mac OS 10.7 with Xcode 4.2.

Springboard

• Push and local notifications for apps appear in the new Notification Center in iOS 5. Notification Center displays notifications that are considered “unread.” In order to accommodate push and local notifications that have no “unread” status, developers can use their application badge count to trigger a clearing of notifications from Notification Center. When an application clears its badge count (by setting it to zero), iOS 5 will clear its notifications from Notification Center.
• FIXED: iOS 5.0 terminates VoIP applications that are resumed in the background for incoming network traffic with extreme frequency. Developers are encouraged to make sure all incoming data is read from VoIP sockets to avoid this condition.
• NEW: The UIPrerenderedIcon key (in the Info.plist file) is not honored in this build.

StoreKit

• NEW: In-App purchase will not work for developers testing their apps with the iTunes Sandbox.

Twitter

• FIXED: When tweeting your location from Safari and exiting before the location can be established, the location arrow will stay in the status bar. The arrow can be removed by killing Safari from the task switcher.

UI Automation

• FIXED: Instruments overwrites the loaded automation script, even if another program is editing it.
• FIXED: The play and record buttons in the Automation instrument script editor may not work properly after targeting an application that was launched by a trace session and has ended. They may also not work if you target an application that was suspended. If you run into this problem and it persists, you may need to close and reopen the trace document to get back into a functional state.
• FIXED: When capturing actions into a script using the Automation instrument, interfaces with web views or table cells that contain a high number of off screen elements may take an extremely long time before returning with an expression.
• The lock() and unlock() functions of UIATarget have been replaced with the lockForDuration(<seconds>) function.
• Starting in iOS 5 beta 2, you can now trigger the execution of an UI Automation script on an iOS device from the host terminal by using the instruments tool. The command is:
  • instruments -w <device id> -t <template> <application>
• When using the cli instruments for UI Automation you can now target the default Automation Template and pass the script and results path into the tool as environment variable options. For example:
  • instruments -w <device id> -t /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Library/Instruments/PlugIns/AutomationInstrument.bundle/Contents/Resources/Automation.tracetemplate <application> -e UIASCRIPT <script> -e UIARESULTSPATH <results path>

UIKit

• Starting in iOS 5 beta 3, the exclusiveTouch property of UIControl has returned to its original default value of NO.
• Returning nil from the tableView:viewForHeaderInSection: method (or its footer equivalent) is no longer sufficient to hide a header. You must override tableView:heightForHeaderInSection: and return0.0 to hide a header.
• In the iOS 5 beta, the UITableViewclass has two methods to move one cell from one row to another with defined parameters. These APIs are:
  • moveSection:toSection:
  • moveRowAtIndexPath:toIndexPath:
• Using the UIWebView class in Interface Builder, setting transparent background color is possible in iOS 5. Developers compiling against the new SDK can check their XIB for the UIWebView transparent setting.
• In the iOS 5 beta, the UINavigationBar, UIToolbar, and UITabBar implementations have changed so that the drawRect: method is not called on instances of these classes unless it is implemented in a subclass. Apps that have re-implemented drawRect: in a category on any of these classes will find that the drawRect:method isn’t called. UIKit does link-checking to keep the method from being called in apps linked before iOS 5 but does not support this design on iOS 5 or later. Apps can either:
  • Use the customization API for bars that in iOS 5 and later, which is the preferred way.
  • Subclass UINavigationBar (or the other bar classes) and override drawRect: in the subclass.
• The indexPathForRow:inSection:, section, and row methods of NSIndexPath now use NSInteger instead of NSUInteger, so that these types match with methods defined on UITableView.
• Touch events are not getting forwarded to the view in the cameraOverlayView property of UIImagePickerController.
• We have changed the behavior of scrollToRowAtIndexPath:atScrollPosition:animated: such that UITableViewScrollPositionTop and UITableViewScrollPositionBottom now adjust for the top and bottom portions of the contentInset property.

WebKit

• In iOS 5, a new inherited CSS property, -webkit-overflow-scrolling, is available. The value touch allows the web developer to opt in to native-style scrolling in an overflow:scroll element. The default value for this property is auto, which allows single-finger scrolling without momentum.
• NEW: In beta 5, accessing sites that use client side SSL certificates does not work and may cause the application to crash.
• The WebKit framework has picked up a newer WebKit engine, which closely matches Safari 5.1. Some areas to be aware of with the new WebKit framework on iOS:
  • There is a new HTML5-compliant parser.
  • Text layout width may change slightly because word-rounding behavior now has floating-point-based precision.
  • There is improved validation of the <input> form field, which includes removing leading zeros and number formatting.
  • Touch events are now supported on input fields.
  • window.onerror is now supported.
  • There is a new user agent that does not have locale information in the User Agent string.
  • NEW: URLs are now canonicalized by making the scheme all lowercase. If a fake URL is used to pass information from a UIWebView back to native code, make sure that the scheme is always lowercase, or that the native code compares the scheme in a case-insensitive manner.

Wi-Fi Syncing

• In iOS 5 beta 4 and later, wireless syncing is now available on Windows as well as the Mac. (This support requires OS X 10.6.8 or Lion.) You will see an option to enable wireless syncing when you connect your device to iTunes with the USB cable. It is recommended you perform your initial sync with a cable after restoring your device.
  • Wireless syncing is triggered automatically when the device is connected to power and on the same network as the paired computer. Or, you can manually trigger a sync from iTunes or from Settings > General > iTunes Sync (same network as paired computer required).
  • If you find issues with apps, media and/or photos synced to your device, you can reset then resync. From Settings > General > Reset, choose Erase all Content and Settings. Then reconnect to iTunes and sync again.
• In some cases, your device may fail to sync contacts, calendars and account settings, or back up to iTunes. If this happens, reboot your device and re-sync.
• FIXED: In some cases, syncing photos may result in only thumbnails on your device. If this happens, unsync Photos then re-sync again.

Xcode

• FIXED: In beta 4, device restores using Xcode were disabled. This has been fixed. Device restores are now enabled and work in Xcode.
• In some cases, Xcode 4.2 Organizer does not display a device that is in restore mode. As a workaround you can use iTunes to restore.
• In iOS 5 beta 5, iOS Simulator is not compatible with previous releases of the iCloud Developer Seed for OS X. It is highly recommended that you update to the latest iCloud Developer Seed to ensure compatibility.
• iOS 5.0 SDK supports both iOS 4.3 and iOS 5.0 simulators.
• NEW: Xcode fails to build a Page-based template. You can work around this issue by adding the Core Graphics framework to your project.

Awarded to the person who discovered or exploited the most technically sophisticated and interesting client-side bug. These days, ‘client’ is pretty much synonymous with ‘web browser’, but don’t forget about all the media player integer overflows!

FreeType vulnerability in iOS (CVE-2011-0226)

Comex exploited a vulnerability in the interpreter for Type 1 font programs in the FreeType library used by MobileSafari. This exploit is a great example of programming a weird machine to exploit a modern system. Comex used his control over the interpreter to construct a highly sophisticated ROP payload at runtime and bypass the ASLR protection in iOS. Furthermore, the ROP payload exploited a kernel vulnerability to execute code in the kernel and disable code-signing. The exploit was hosted on jailbreakme.com and was successfully used by thousands of people to jailbreak their iOS devices.

Yeah! Thats an achievement for Comex. Lets put our hands together and congratulate comex for his awesome work.

In a note to clients Peter Misek writes that merging the two would lead to “synergies,” including better gross margins and an ease in licensing of content.

“Users want to be able to pick up any iPhone, iPad, or Mac (or turn on their iTV) and have content move seamlessly between them and be optimized for the user and the device currently being used,” writes Pisek. “We believe this will be difficult to implement if iOS and OS X are kept separate.”

Hence, “We believe Apple is looking to merge iOS (iPhones/iPads) with OS X (Macs) into a single platform for apps and cloud services starting in 2012-13.” Specifically, Misek sees the Macbook Air gaining Apple’s next processor, the “A6,” as he calls it, in the second half of 2012, or some time in 2013, following the debut of the chip in the “iPad 3” in the first quarter of 2012, and in the “iPhone 5” next summer. (Misek considers the forthcoming iPhone to be the “iPhone 4S.”

Misek thinks MacBook “Pro” models and Mac desktops will stick with the current software and Intel processors in order to maximize 64-bit application compatibility, but that they, too, will switch over to an iOS platform by 2016.

Misek continues to say that Apple will likely move its devices over to the new OS slowly, starting with the MacBook Air.

“We believe Apple is ready to start sampling the A6 quad-core app processor and will be the first such multi-device platform capable of PC-like strength.”

• Persistent Badge. iOS’s current notification system lacks a way of alerting the user that there are unread messages within Notification Center. The only way to know anything about your notifications is to actually enter Notification Center. Now, the persistent badge lists the number of unread notifications by displaying a small badge in the status bar. It is system-wide and can be seen whenever the status bar is onscreen.
• Widgets. As my other iOS videos, this one shows how widgets can be implemented within Notification Center. Widgets can make use of the new swipe gestures within Notification Center, take you to apps, and link to more information.
• Collapsible Notifications. Many apps (especially social networking apps) push out many notifications. Instead of having them all display at once, notification headers can now be collapsed to make more use of the screen.
• Incoming Calls as Notifications. Since our phones do so much more than just make phone calls, incoming phone calls are no longer interrupting and do not rip you out of your current app. When the phone is in use (and the screen has not dimmed from inactivity), incoming calls now appear as a standard notification banner. Tapping on the notification answers the phone, while simply ignoring the banner dismisses the call once it has gone to Voicemail.

Okay, I guess we have all the above. So, lets get started with upgrading your Hackintosh

STEP 1: Purchase OS X Lion from the Mac App Store

1. Boot into your existing Snow Leopard installation.
2. Download the OS X Lion App directly from the Mac App Store - it will automatically open.
3. Click Continue.
4. Target your currently booted Snow Leopard drive and hit Install. This will not install the OS or affect this drive in any way. It will simply install the files necessary to do so later in the process. 
5. Click Restart to reboot.

If you’ve installed directly over an existing Snow Leopard installation, you’re done! You should already have done proper post-installation steps on your existing Snow Leopard drive, so skip Step 5 and simply reboot into Lion!

STEP 5: MultiBeast

UNLOCKERS AND THOSE PRESERVING THEIR UNLOCKABLE BASEBANDS SHOULD STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS!  You will very likely lose your unlockable baseband if you try to install iOS 5.

THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS!  There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps.  (Seriously!)

THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY!  No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost.  You will need to use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered now”  to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari.  If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered.

IF YOU HAVE THE 06.15 BASEBAND ON YOUR 3GS…this redsn0w will get you past the iTunes restore error you’ll get when using the stock IPSW (nobody other than those with the 06.15 baseband should be going anywhere near the stock IPSW!).

In conjunction with iOS5 beta4 being released to iOS developers, redsn0w 0.9.8b4 is now available for jailbreak app developers.  Remember, it’s a tetheredjailbreak right now so you’ll need to use redsn0w to boot into a jailbroken state at each power cycle.

Just a little while ago, we informed you that Apple’s OTA update doesn’t work on jailbroken iOS device. That’s a relief to those who don’t want to lose their jailbreak via OTA pushes.  If you’re jailbroken, you’ll need to use the standard iTunes method to get to iOS 5 beta4.

But, here come an interesting but not surprising move from Apple. Apple made sure that jailbroken iOS device won’t be able to update over the air. In other words, if you have a jailbroken iOS device running iOS 5 beta 3, you will not be able to update your iOS device OTA.

This is what @MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev team has to say..

• The 5.0b4 OTA update won’t work on JB devices due to an explicit check of /Applications..almost like a present from Apple
• they check to make sure /Applications is a real directory, which it isn’t in a stashed jailbreak (not sure how unionfs would act)

As of now we are not sure how we can over come this. Will it be possible for the iPhone dev team to over the over the air update? Well, not sure.. We will just have to wait and see.

Apple is planning to make the final version of iOS 5 to be available by the end of September, 2011. It is also expected that Apple will launch its next gen iPhone [iPhone 4S / iPhone 5].

Apple also released iTunes 10.5 BETA 4. So, it is required you to first update your iTunes to iOS 5 BETA 4 before you upgrade to iOS 5 beta 4.

How to create an Mac OS X Lion 10.7 USB install drive

Step 1: First launch Mac App Store and download Mac OS X Lion

Step 2: Once it is downloaded, find the installer in your Application folder. Right-click and select the option to Show Package Contents.

Step 3: Double-click the Contents folder to open it.

Step 4: Inside the Contents folder you will find a SharedSupport folder. Double-click it to open that.

Step 5: Here you’ll find the InstallESD.dmg inside the ShareSupport folder. That’s the OS X 10.7 Lion installer — you need to copy it to your USB Flash drive.

Step 6: Right-click the InstallESD.dmg file and hit Copy. Switch to Finder and paste the file to your Desktop.

Note: Paste this — do not drag it. Doing so endangers the installation application.

Step 7: Open the Applications folder in Finder and locate the Utilities folder. Double-click to open it.

Step 8: Double-click the Disk Utility icon to open it.

Step 9: Move the ESDInstall.dmg file from your Finder desktop to Disk Utility, as shown below. Drop it into the left-most windowpane inside of Disk Utility.

Step 10: In Disk Utility, click the InstallESD.dmg icon.

Step 11: Click on the Restore tab. Now insert your blank USB drive. Once it appears on the Finder desktop, move its icon to the Disk Utility window. Drop it onto the Destination.

Step 12: If you are prompted for your user ID and password, enter them and hit OK. This starts the copying process.

Step 13: The process copies the InstallESD.dmg image to the USB stick, verifies it and completes. Now just wait for your new OS X Lion install USB stick to finish. You’re done.

Keep the drive in a safe place. You never know when you’ll need to do a fresh install. Use this disk to boot any OS X 10.7 Lion compatible Mac. Install OS X Lion 10.7 just as you installed previous versions of OS X

As mentioned in our previous post, Mac OS X Lion 10.7 will be available for download via Mac App Store. For those who are running Sn0w Leopard, should install Migration Assistant update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which is available for download. This update addresses an issue with the Migration Assistant application in Mac OS X Snow Leopard that prevents transfer of your personal data, settings, and compatible applications from a Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard to a new Mac running Mac OS X Lion.

If you are planning to install Chromium OS on your Mac Book Air, please DON’T skip any content on this page. Read it thoroughly before your proceed with the tutorial. We at MacHackPC have not tested this and will not be held responsible for any loss of data and any other issues related with this hack. So, please proceed with caution.

So WiFi works, graphics are fully accelerated via nVidia’s drivers, screen brightness controls work, sound works, touchpad works. Basically everything works. The touchpad drivers could use some tweaking, as scrolling is currently painfully slow, but that’s about the only issue I can think of. Boot time is around 22 seconds to the login screen, most of which is wasted by Apple’s EFI implementation, as once control is passed to the kernel, the boot only takes a further 6-7 seconds thanks to the fast SSD inside the Air. Battery life is probably slightly better than that of OS X.

I’ve only tested this on an 11″ model of the Air (MacbookAir3,1), since that’s all I have, but I should think it’d work without issue on the 13″ version (MacbookAir3,2) too. I’ve also not tested previous generations of the Macbook Air, but I suspect they’ll work too. Infact, this image will probably work on quite a number of nVidia-based Macbook/Macbook Pro machines. I won’t be supporting anything but the MacbookAir3,1 and MacbookAir3,2 but if it just happens to work for you on something else, great!

There is however, one huge caveat sadly. Since nVidia’s GPU drivers don’t work very well under an EFI boot, you have to use BIOS emulation mode, probably more commonly known as Boot Camp. However, Apple’s BIOS emulation implementation doesn’t support booting from a USB stick. So, to boot Chromium OS you must first copy it to the SSD, overwriting OS X. It is technically possible to dual-boot, but that’s not something I’m going to support. If this is a route you’re interested in going, simply make sure that the first partition on the CrOS image is the first partition on your SSD, the third partition on the CrOS image is the third on the SSD and that you have a bootloader somewhere configured in the same way as the one on the second partition of the CrOS image. With that said, please don’t ask me for help with dual-booting this.

Requirements:

• 2GB USB Stick
• Mac OS X install USB stick that came in the box with your Macbook Air
• Back up your Mac Book Air

How to install Chromium on your Mac Book Air

Step 1: Download Chromium Image from the link posted below

Step 2: Extract the archive using your decompression tool of choice (The Unarchiver for Mac works great)

Step 3: Burn the image to a USB stick using dd (check the wiki if you need help with this, same as Flow/Vanilla instructions)

Step 4: Insert both this USB stick and the OS X install drive into your Macbook Air while it’s switched off

Step 5: Hold the “C” key down and press the power button, you can let go of the “C” key once the Apple logo appears

Step 6: Once the language selection screen appears, pick the appropriate option and click next

Step 7: Once the install wizard appears, click Utilities on the bar at the top, and then Terminal

Step 8: Type the following command without quotes: “umount /dev/disk0*”

Step 9: Type the following command without quotes: “dd if=/dev/rdisk1 of=/dev/rdisk0 bs=4m count=512″

Step 10: Type the following command without quotes: “bless –device /dev/disk0s2 –setBoot –legacy”

Step 11: Once it says it’s finished (basically when it says X bytes copied in Y seconds), hold down the power button until your machine switches off

Step 12: Remove both your USB stick and the OS X install drive

Step 13: Hit the power button, wait about 22 seconds

That’s it! Enjoy.

With CallBar, there is no more interruption on incoming calls, whether its a phone call or a FaceTime call. If this turns out to be true, it will mean there would be an iPhone 4S in addition to the prepaid iPhone 3GS available within the next month to two. Let’s do one better, though. In addition to that news, we are told that Apple will continue to sell the current iPhone 4 as well, finally giving the company a full range of devices in the lower, mid, and high-end price segments.

Coming back to next generation iPhone, whether it’s the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, we are sure that it will look quite similar / identical to the current iPhone [iPhone 4]. Source theorized that we’d have seen new 3rd party cases by now if the upcoming iPhone featured a different exterior, though Apple has surely been cracking down on their case specification leaks.

If iPhone 4S is identical to iPhone 4, will Apple continue to make iPhone 4 available to the public ? Well, I see Apple repeating the same strategy when they released iPhone 3GS.  What do you think?

According to the source, the said unit is identical to the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0 and is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera based on the diagnostic software. They have also published a iTunes artwork which seems to look more like the original iPod Touch.

Looking at all these it make us believe that the unit could be a prototype device of iPhone 4 from 2010. What do you think?

To be clear: do /not/ go back to jailbreakme.com and “redo” the jailbreak; instead, just open Cydia, and accept the new “Essential Upgrade”.

If for some reason, after installing the Essential upgrade,  Cydia still disappears when you try to jailbreak, try to send Console output and email that to @comex (comexk [at] gmail [dot] com). To get console output use iPhone Configuration Utility, that can be downloaded from HERE.

Sony will have Taiwan-based partners begin production of PlayStation 4 (PS4) featuring body movement-based control like Kinect at the end of 2011 for launch in 2012, according to Taiwan-based component makers.

As a few of you know, comex wanted to talk to me by email. This is an exact copy of the emails to me. It appears that he confirms the JB release date. This may be a setup by him of some sort so take it as you want.

According to the screenshot Comex hints us that the official JailbreakMe 3.0 should be ready by tomorrow. It looks like Comex has sent this email at 1:49 AM. So, it is quite possible that @comex may release the final version of JailbreakMe 3.0 today. In a matter of hours.

“No, I didn’t see your tweets. (I think they were deleted?) But if no more issues come up, it should be ready by tomorrow.”

So, just keep you eye open. Comex may drop it anytime.

This all started late one night on the 27th of  June. I was playing Star Craft with some friends reading Comex’s twitter updates like every other person waiting for the jailbreak. That is when I had a crazy idea just to search a site he posted in a previous tweet. That site was www.qoid.us , during my initial search, the main thing that came up was comex’s bannerbomb exploit for the wii. This lead me to believe even more that the site was his. The next thing I did was just do a search for directories on his site and that is when I stumbled upon it. I saw a folder called saffron that grabbed my attention, mainly because jbme 2.0 was star.

So what would you do if you stumbled on a website that had all the data for the jailbreak people have been waiting months for? At first I wasn’t sure what to do, let alone believe I found the files. The only true indication that I found them was all the pdf files, deb files named after different iOS devices, and a php file. The last thing I wanted was to just send out all the files saying here they are. As someone who has worked on a project for years in the past I would hate for my work to leak out before my self or the team was ready. Comex had been working on this for almost a year.

The first thing I did was the obvious, test the files. From comex’s tweets at the time I figured they were close to completion and wouldn’t completely brick my iPad. The next was I made a copy of the files for my own purpose of trying on other devices, not to leak them. I didn’t know if comex would have the files moved before I woke up the next day. Then as proof to my friends who had no reason to even want the jailbreak, but wanted to see it I uploaded them to this site. Worst mistake ever.

Now comes the next day, what would you do with the information you gained from decompiling and decompressing the files. You don’t want to leak them, but there has been no information on any updates. People are starting to doubt the jailbreak is even real. What I did was just spread information about the jailbreak, no pictures, no files, just me posting on forums what I know. Of course there were people calling me names saying I am a troll and other names. Next I sent off private messages to two people on the forums I was posting on. At that point after a few messages the only thing I sent was a picture. That was the first and only thing I sent. The picture was of the new jailbreakme website, with the url removed so the site didn’t get out. That was the end of it on June 28th.

I went on vacation on the 30th and won’t be home until July 15th, but my curiosity started to get the better of me last night. I have these files that didn’t work on my iPad, but I wondered if they would work at all. I contacted another person on the forums who was multimediawill aka appreviewer will aka Will Sayer. He tried one of the pdf files and it jailbroke his iPad. I was surprised, he was surprised. He swore up and down he wouldn’t leak it, and I went to bed. That is when I woke up and saw my list of emails streaming in. Immediately the files were deleted, I felt stupid and horrible that my curiosity got the best of me and caused this. I never intended for it to get leaked out this big. In all I apologize to comex for my actions.  I don’t want attention, and never wanted to spread his work like Will did. I was just curious, and this curiosity caused this. So in the grand scheme of things the leak was probably 10% my fault, I found the files, made a copy and re-hosted them, but Will was the exact opposite. He wanted attention and spread the news to tech blogs made videos and even spread the links to the files on my site.

As mentioned previously, Apple will be distributing Mac OS X Lion via Mac App Store in a matter of weeks. So, we strongly recommend you to stay away from this upload

Now, @comex has updated JailbreakME.com with some git commits (each commit is represented by a SHA1 hash). These commits refer to Comex GitHub webpage. The commits tell us how long @comex has been working on this new exploit. It looks like he has been working hard on this for about 10 months – that is since August.

On the page it reads “It’s been far too long” and the title reads “no, seriously” – This tell us that it took a long time to crack it open.

With this new teaser, all we can say is, the iPad 2 jailbreak is expected to be released pretty soon. But, we are not sure when it will be released. We will keep you posted when its available. So, stay tuned..

What are you predictions for the iPhone 5? I heard someplace that a curved display was in the making and attention was being given to the antenna issues. According to source who are familiar with Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices division has confirmed with BGR that Microsoft is planning to unveil its next generation Xbox console at E3 2012.

The source is not aware of Microsoft’s launch plans for its next-generation Xbox, with we are told has been in development since 2006. Microsoft has sold nearly 54.4 million Xbox 360 units since the console’s introduction in November 2005. The popular video game system is currently the ninth most popular gaming console of all time behind Nintendo’s original NES and just ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3, which has sold 51 million units to date.

Rumors says that, Microsoft is going to call its next generation Xbox as Xbox 720. In a blog post the iPhone Dev Team explains that, Apple has started to implement a system where it will only allow users to restore your iOS device with the current firmware, making it nearly impossible for downgrades. It looks like Apple is about to change its firmware signing process – The new process will become much more like the BBTicket (Baseband Ticket) which will make it much more difficult to download.

Starting with the iOS5 beta, the role of the “APTicket” is changing — it’s being used much like the “BBTicket” has always been used.  The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket, which is uniquely generated at each and every restore (in other words, it doesn’t depend merely on your ECID and firmware version…it changes every time you restore, based partly on a random number).  This APTicket authentication will happen at every boot, not just at restore time.  Because only Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless.

Though Apple implements this new method in iOS 5 you can still downgrade to firmware older than iOS 5. So, all those saved SHSH blob are still useful.

This will only affect restores starting at iOS5 and onward, and Apple will be able to flip that switch off and on at will (by opening or closing the APTicket signing window for that firmware, like they do for the BBTicket).  geohot’s limera1n exploit occurs before any of this new checking is done, so tethered jailbreaks will still always be possible for devices where limera1n applies.  Also, restoring to pre-5.0 firmwares with saved blobs will still be possible (but you’ll soon start to need to use older iTunes versions for that). Note that iTunes ultimately is *not* the component that matters here..it’s the boot sequence on the device starting with the LLB.

Although it’s always been just “a matter of time” before Apple started doing this (they’ve always done this with the BBTicket), it’s still a significant move on Apple’s part (and it also dovetails with certain technical requirements of their upcoming OTA “delta” updates).

This does not mean that the cat & mouse game has come to an end. The iPhone Dev teams says that Apple has step up the game and it is possible to find way to overcome this process.

MuscleNerd mentioned in his twitter that Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in iOS 5 beta 2. It is quite possible that Apple received pressure from carrier to patch the exploit used by Gevey SIM.

As of now, we haven’t heard any word from Gevey SIM officials. But, we are sure that guys over at Gevey SIM will start working on other alternatives to unlock iPhone.
