Yesterday Google launched its Nexus One. If you are interested in getting one of this bad boy you can get it from here – Google Phone. Before the launch of Nexus One, we have posted an article – Google’s Nexus One loaded with Android is rooted. – Thanks to Paul. Knowledgeable commentators in the Android community noted that the root was only possible due to the Engineering Bootloader shipped on the devices distributed by Google, and that retail devices would likely have Locked Bootloaders. In other words, when you place an order for Nexus One, you will get a Locked Bootloader device. Again, we need to thank Paul for unlocking this Bootloader.
With just a little secret command you can unlock Nexus One’s Bootloader. When you issue this command via fastboot, Nexus One will prompt to this screen (below). Once you decide and unlock your bootloader, you can flash anything you want onto your Nexus One.
Please read the following Warning before we start the step by step tutorial on How to Unlock the Bootloader on your Nexus One.

Warning: Please do it on your own risk. We will not be responsible for any damage or breakage of your phone. Doing this will break your Google’s Nexus One warranty.

I can't do this. I don't fully understand your instructions. I'm using a Mac.
Sorry, What part were you not able to understand. Are you getting any errors?
I don't get it at all. I download Fastboot. Then it says, “Mac Users: Open Terminal at the folder you just extracted and Type “./fastboot-mac oem unlock“ I don't know what that means. I know how to open Terminal. I don't know how to open it “at the folder” I just extracted. How do you open terminal at a folder. You open Terminal. That's all you can do.
If I double click on Fastboot, it opens a Terminal window and a lot of stuff appears in that window. I can't enter anything into that window. It's impossible. The phone is of course connected via USB, that is not in your instructions, but it is. So I have no idea how to do this. I've jailbroken at least twenty five iPhones. This escapes me completely.
I am really sorry about this. Here is what you do. Open terminal and navigate to the folder where you extracted via terminal. This is how you do it – Open Terminal type 'cd ' and now, drag the folder where you have extracted the file and drop it into the terminal and hit enter. Now, run that './fastboot-mac oem unlock' -
Once again sorry for the Confusion
I type cd. I drop the entire folder into terminal after cd. This appears: Users/rennis/Desktop/fastboot. I then add /fastboot-mac oem unlock. This appears: No such file or directory
Sorry, I still don't get it.
Okay, after another attempt I have this in Terminal: Macintosh:fastboot rennis$ cd /Users/rennis/Desktop/fastboot ./fastboot-mac oem unlock
Macintosh:fastboot rennis$
What now? The phone is unchanged.
You are right that you need to connect your device to the computer. That said, did you get the following message < Waiting for Device >
No. I didn't get anything on the phone screen. Does the phone have to be in bootload mode. This isn't clear.
The message should say it on your terminal windows.
Okay. I know I'm missing something here. I download fastboot. I open Terminal, I type cd space then I drop the fastboot folder onto the Terminal. then I type ./fastboot-mac oem unlock. So what happens now?
Okay, make sure you device is connect.Open terminal, drag the folder, type the command and hit enter, here you should see <Waiting for device > on the terminal windows.
Yes. It now says waiting for device
I am glad to see some progress
. So, do you see the Unlock Bootloader image on your Nexus One?
No. No image on the phone.
Yes! Let put it in the bootloader mode (turn off the phone then press power while holding the home/trackball button)
This is really strange. Just want to make sure you have the latest USB drivers right?
Okay. believe it or not I have the unlock bootloader screen on the phone.
Now you are talking bro!!! I am glad it worked for you.!
I don't know anything about USB drivers. that isn't in your instructions. I did the unlock using the bootloader unlock screen. I assume it's done.
I understand its not in the instructions. Its one of the troubleshooting point. Well, anyway you got it to work.
How do I know it's unlocked?
One interesting offshoot of this is that the Market isn't functioning right anymore.
The Market is fine now. I have another problem. I'm following these instructions for rooting, and in my Terminal it says that it's sent the info to the phone, but the phone is unchanged. here is what I'm doing:
Download the Superboot.zip file and extract to a new folder on your desktop
Put your device in bootloader mode (see step I above)
Mac Users: launch the terminal application and go to the directory containing the extracted Superboot files, then type chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh [Enter], followed by ./install-superboot-mac.sh [Enter]
I do this and nothing happens.
Well I think I've rooted this phone in spite of myself. I just found Superuser Permission with my apps. Is this phone rooted?
If you found the Superuser Permission then its an evidence that you have rooted your phone
Yes. It's rooted in spite of me. I have one hopefully last question, I keep reading about flashing a recovery image to the phone. Is this not done when you root? If not, Is this essential, and if so, where can I get instructions for a Mac?
No! You have just rooted. In other words gained access to the system files. Now, flashing a recovery images / flashing a custom ROM – http://www.machackpc.com/headline/get-a-better-...
I keep reading that I need a custom recovery image installed before I can install a ROM. Is that correct?
When I try to enter recovery mode I get an exclamation mark in a triangle. I have to pull the battery to recover.
alright. im having trouble with this now. im running the new FRF72 build on my nexus and im trying to unlock the bootloader and im having the same problem that rje had…meaning all my terminal says when i do the instructions is no such files in the directory or watever…what am i doing wrong? thanks
