Jailbreak iPodTouch 2G & iPhone 3G iOS 4 GM using redsn0w 0.9.5 (Windows)

Update (06/19/2010) – Jailbreak tool RedSn0w for iOS 4 got few more options added.

Today, Apple released iTunes 9.2 which supports iPhone 4 & iOS 4. With out iTunes 9.2, you will not be able to restore your iDevice to the yet to release iOS 4. Recently, at the WWDC 2010 Event, Apple released a golden master version of iOS 4 for only developers. Some how, iOS 4 GM has leaked in the wild and a lot of users trying to get their hand on it. If you are one of them - read the rest of post twice may be thrice before you even begin the process.

Finally, here comes a jailbreaking tool for Windows users from the iPhone Dev Team. With this version of RedSn0w 0.9.5, you could Jailbreak iPodTouch 2G & iPhone 3G running iOS 4 (previously known as iPhone OS 4) on your Windows computer. If you have a iPhone 3GS and a Windows computer, then you would need SnowBreeze. Which is expected to release when iOS 4 releases (June 21st, 2010).

This is a beta release of RedSn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps. This is not for any average users, if you are not sure what you are doing, please stay away from it. There are many things broken with jailbroken apps in the iOS4 environment right now.

Remember, this is only a Jailbreaking tool, it doesn’t perform any hactivation. You’ll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. Once you update your iPhone 3G to iOS 4 your baseband will be updated to the latest and will be have to wait for the dev team to release a new version of UltraSn0w. One of the best about this Jailbreak is that, you can enable Multitasking and homescreen wallpaper (Apple doesn’t normally allow this on iPodTouch 2G & iPhone 3G devices)

Step 1: Download the iOS 4 GM (from Apple website or Go Here), iTunes 9.2 & RedSn0w 0.9.5

Step 2: Update to this latest firmware iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw / iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw

Step 3: Launch redsn0w 0.9.5 and navigate to the download iOS 4 file. RedSn0w will verify the ipsw file. Once verified click on Next

Step 4: Check mark “Install Cydia” & “Enable Multitasking & Wallpapers” and click Next

Step 5: Now, make sure your iPodTouch 2G is powered OFF & Plugged IN as you will be going into DFU Mode.

Step 6: Now, Just follow the instruction on the screen to put your iPodTouch into DFU mode. Timing is very important (Don’t worry if you missed. Just do it again).

Step 7: When you see a white bright screen on your iPhone, then you can relax. redsn0w will do the rest.

Step 8: Once done, it will reboot your iPodTouch and you are back in business. If you did a firmware restore then sync your iPodTouch , if not, you are good to use your iPodTouch with Multitasking enabled.

GREAT! You are done with the Jailbreaking process.
