How to change your SMS sound on iPhone and iPodTouch

Well, I guess you know how to add ring-tones to your iPhone/iPodTouch. And have you ever wondered how to add new SMS / Text Message Tunes ? May be YES!!! Well, here is the way..

With this simple process,  you could add new tunes to your SMS / Text Messages. But, unfortunately, you could add only upto 6 of them.  These SMS / Text Message sounds are of .caf file type. Here you can fined – How to Convert a MP3 file to a CAF file Using iTunes. For now, I have uploaded a zip file that contains 14 SMS Tunes. Hope you will like it. Please leave your comments.

Here is what you need to do…

Download the Following

  1. Download & Install Netatalk via Cydia on your iPhone for MAC users / Download & Install WinSCP for Windows Users
  2. Download & Install OpenSSH via Cydia
  3. Download SMS Tones for iPhone/iPodTouch

Once done downloading all required files follow these steps.

Step 1: Reboot your iPhone/iPodTouch

Step 2: Connect your iPhone/iPodTouch to Mac / PC

Step 3: For Mac Users: Open Finder. (Here you should see your iPhone/iPodTouch in the Shared Device List.) Click on it. For Win Users: Run WinSCP

Step 4: You need to enter Username & Password. (Username: root, Password: apline). For Windows users you also need to enter your Wi-Fi IP Address.

Step 5: Navigate to this Path – “/root/System/Library/Audio/UISounds/”

Step 6: Scroll all the way to the bottom you will see this list of files.

  • sms-received1.caf – (Tri-tone – is reference to what we see on the UI)
  • sms-received2.caf – (Chime- is reference to what we see on the UI)
  • sms-received3.caf – (Glass- is reference to what we see on the UI)
  • sms-received4.caf – (Horn- is reference to what we see on the UI)
  • sms-received5.caf – (Bell- is reference to what we see on the UI)
  • sms-received6.caf – Electronic- is reference to what we see on the UI)

Step 7: Back up those 6 files “sms-received*.caf”

Step 8: Extract the SMS Tones for iPhone/iPodTouch.

Step 9: I have uploaded 14 SMS tunes. You can pick and choose from that folder or make your own or download it from some where else. But, we need to make sure that the file name(s) should be the same as the above list.

Step 10: Drag and drop the new SMS tunes into this folder. “/root/System/Library/Audio/UISounds/”

Step 11: It will ask you, if you want to replace these file. Say “Replace”

Step 12: Once done. Close all windows and reboot your iPhone/iPodTouch.

There you go. You have your new set of SMS tunes in your iPhone/iPodTouch.
