Apple’s recent acquisition was Lala, an online music store. Apple paid approximately $80 million for this acquisition. Why did Apple acquired Lala? and Now Why are they planning to buy iCall, a VoIP provider?

There may be many reasons for this.

  • Its better to have there own product to give tough competition (Eg: Google has its own – Google Voice)
  • May be, Apple is planing not to give business to other VoIP App
  • Why iCall ? – It has over 100,000 iPhone Users and this product has lot of potential.

Apple may acquire iCall for $50 to $60 million. Doing this will piss off Apple’s carrier partners, which sell the majority of Apple’s iPhones, and currently make the vast majority of their revenue by selling voice phone service. But for Apple’s longer term strategy, it is a good idea to have its own VoIP product.

Once Apple’s exclusive contract with AT&T comes to an end, this VoIP product can be implemented.
