A nifty application from Sling Media, a subsidiary of EchoStar, was introduced last year for iPhone. With which, iPhone users with a Slingbox at home, can watch and control their home television signal from their iPhone. Apple gave Sling Media a green light by approving the app in its AppStore. But, AT&T gave them a red light. Because, Slingbox’s bandwidth-intensive video service would overwhelm AT&T’s network, so it limited the application to work only over an iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection.
But, now, AT&T have changed a lot of things. AT&T announced Thursday morning that it will allow the SlingPlayer app to stream over its 3G network. In a press release AT&T mentioned “Since mid-December 2009, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media — as well as Apple — that the optimized app can run on its 3G network“. AT&T also mentioned “AT&T worked with Sling Media to ensure the app is optimized to minimize network congestion”
This updated SlingPlayer app is not immediately available. Sling Media is waiting for an approval from Apple AppStore. Once the App is approved, all user who bought the SlingPlayer app for $30 will be getting a free update which will work on AT&T’s 3G network.
This app will be GREAT on a bigger screen – The iPad. I am not sure, if iPad will replace your laptop but, I am pretty sure that it will replace your television when you are away from home.
