Will ZunePhone be loaded with Windows Mobile 7?

By Mac Hack PC 28 January 2010 View Comments

Microsoft launched Zune line of music players, back in 2006. Even since then, many of us been expecting a device that merges with a phone. If that legit, it will be called a ZunePhone.

On January 26, 2010, Zune software v4.2 was released as a mandatory update due to significant changes in architecture and content. Customers are prompted to upgrade their software and update the term of services.

Our sources, started poking around the latest version of Zune software. When they started looking at the INF file, which seems to the most essential component of a driver package responsible for identifying the driver and associating it with compatible USB hardware ID’s, and in this case, the Zune.inf file is responsible for associating devices with the Zune driver. Our sources found a reference to “Phone.Device”

Microsoft's Zune Phone

Looking at the above file, we cannot confirm that Microsoft will launch a ZunePhone. But, we are definite that there is something interesting on the way.

As you know, Microsoft is about to unveil  Windows Mobile 7 in just few weeks and an unconfirmed sources says this will come in two editions: one for businesses and the other for consumers. Is this telling us something in regards to ZunePhone?

Moreover, just as how the current three generation Zunes are represented by three different IDs, there are three unique class IDs and specifically Product IDs (PID) that identify three potential “Zune Phone” models (not storage capacities) off the bat. My bet is that they’re not just capacity variants (since various Zune capacities are all grouped under the same PID), but three actual hardware SKUs.
